How Brandswitch Uses AI to Find the Best Brand Alternatives

We built Brandswitch to solve a simple problem: finding brands similar to the ones you already love. Here's how AI makes that possible at scale.

If you have ever found yourself searching for "brands like Nike" or "alternatives to Zara," you already understand the problem we set out to solve. You know what you like, but you want to explore what else is out there โ€” maybe something more affordable, more sustainable, or simply fresh and different. That search used to mean scrolling through dozens of generic listicles and outdated Reddit threads. We built Brandswitch to change that.

The Problem With Traditional Brand Discovery

Most "brands like X" content on the web is written by hand โ€” a writer picks 5 to 10 alternatives based on personal experience or a quick Google search, publishes it, and moves on. The result? Lists that are biased, incomplete, and rarely updated. A blog post from 2021 won't tell you about the exciting DTC brand that launched last year, and it certainly won't account for your specific market or price preferences.

We wanted to build something that could scale across every category โ€” from fashion and footwear to electronics, home goods, and everything in between โ€” and keep itself current without relying on a single editorial team to manually curate thousands of brand relationships.

How We Use AI to Map the Brand Universe

At the core of Brandswitch is an AI-powered system that analyses brands across multiple dimensions: what they sell, who they serve, how they position themselves, and where they operate. Rather than relying on surface-level category matching ("both sell shoes, so they must be similar"), our system understands the nuances that actually matter to consumers.

For every brand in our database โ€” over 22,000 and counting โ€” the AI evaluates factors like product category overlap, price positioning, target audience, brand values, and market presence. This multi-dimensional analysis produces similarity scores that go far beyond what a simple category tag could achieve. When you search for brands like Patagonia, you will not just see other outdoor brands. You will see brands that share a similar ethos around sustainability and quality, at comparable price points.

Finding the Best Brands in Every Category

Identifying alternatives is only half the equation. The other half is knowing which brands deserve to be featured in the first place. We use AI to evaluate thousands of potential brands and determine which ones are worth your attention based on real signals: domain authority, customer sentiment, social presence, affiliate trust scores, and product range depth.

This is what powers our curated "Best Of" lists and category rankings. Instead of relying on paid placements or subjective opinions, our ranking engine surfaces brands that consistently perform well across multiple quality indicators. When a new brand enters the market and starts gaining traction, our system picks it up โ€” no manual intervention needed.

Localised Discovery Across 18 Markets

One thing that sets Brandswitch apart from similar tools is genuine localisation. A shopper in Germany has different brand options than someone in the US or Australia. Our AI doesn't just translate content โ€” it analyses which brands actually operate in each market, adjusts recommendations based on local availability, and generates descriptions in the appropriate language.

We currently serve 18 markets across North America, Europe, and Oceania, with each market getting its own curated brand database and localised experience. This means when you browse Brandswitch from the Netherlands, you see brands that ship to the Netherlands, with descriptions in a language that makes sense for that market.

AI-Generated Descriptions That Actually Help

Ever visited a brand comparison site where every description reads like it was copied from the brand's own About page? We took a different approach. Our AI generates unique, informative descriptions for each brand that focus on what matters to someone evaluating alternatives: what the brand sells, who it is for, what makes it distinctive, and why people tend to look for alternatives.

These descriptions are written in natural language, optimised for search engines, and localised for each market. The result is that every brand page on Brandswitch provides genuine value โ€” not just a logo and a link, but real context that helps you make an informed decision.

What Comes Next

We are continuously improving our recommendation engine. In the coming months, we plan to incorporate community signals โ€” your votes, suggestions, and comparisons โ€” to further refine our similarity scores. We are also expanding our brand database and adding new markets.

Brandswitch is and will remain free to use. Our goal is simple: help you discover brands you will love, faster. Whether you are looking for a more affordable alternative to your favourite luxury brand or hunting for an emerging label in a specific niche, we want Brandswitch to be the place where you start that search.

Have a brand you think should be on Brandswitch? Every brand page has a suggestion form โ€” we review every submission.
